While preparing a feature story on Miami's long shuttered Marine Stadium in August, I was allowed to get a good look at this fascinating old place, which these days is fenced and off limits. While the Miami Herald assigned a staff photographer to show what it looks like today, I couldn't resist taking a bunch of photos myself. I've posted 31 of those here, which you can enlarge by clicking on any of the images. I was surprised to see that even after 14 years, everything from seats for the audience to urinals in the bathrooms were still in place. Only now there is extensive vandalism and layers of graffiti. If you look closely, especially at photos toward the bottom of the page, you can see evidence of the damage done by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which lead to Marine Stadium being declared unsafe. Especially indicative is the exposed rebar on the lower beams of the structure, where the concrete was worn away. It's a shame repairs were never made and that it's being allowed to crumble. |
